Our Response to COVID-19<\/span><\/span><\/h1>
<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

The COVID-19 crisis affects the human rights of all children in all countries. Emerging pieces of evidence show that the pandemic and the response to it have varying impacts on the realization of the rights of the child. The lockdowns and confinement measures increase the risks of children witnessing or experiencing domestic violence and gender-based violence, disproportionately affecting girls. School suspensions, limited access to sexual and reproductive health information, and increased levels of sexual abuse and exploitation may lead to a rise in teenage pregnancy rates and maternal and child death rates. The loss of jobs and reduced income due to the pandemic response could push more children in Asia to live in extreme poverty. Distance learning is highlighting the digital divide in terms of gender, disability, geographical area, and generation. The COVID-19 pandemic and response have diverse effects on the realization of the rights of children accessing the justice system and of children in street situations, in indigenous communities, in conflict-affected areas, in alternative care, in informal settlements, in the context of migration, and in other situations of vulnerability. Furthermore, the physical health risks, isolation, school closures, economic vulnerabilities, and uncertainty of the future due to the pandemic are adversely affecting children\u2019s mental health and psychosocial well-being.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the other hand, we see children taking action. We see children striving to understand the COVID-19 pandemic and being involved in protecting themselves, their families, and their peers. They are using digital tools and other platforms to support each other, promote awareness, exchange information, and voice out their opinions. These are pieces of evidence that show children as active citizens and not as passive subjects of the pandemic response.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As part of our efforts to empower children, we have gathered the different efforts of child-led groups supported by CRC Asia member organizations, as well as the various activities of children we have worked with previously, to demonstrate that this unprecedented pandemic crisis presents an opportunity for us, adults, to help children develop their skills and leadership in civic engagements at the local, national, regional, and global levels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

For the first time since the mandate of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children (UN SRSG-VAC) was established, Dr. Najat Maalla M\u2019jid, gave a report on her work directly to children, on the margins of the Human Rights Council (HRC). It is a historic moment for child participation on the fringes of HRC.<\/div>\n

Young change makers and civil society organizations in Nepal worked together on different facets of online violence and exploitation children are facing and the roles of different government agencies to make online safe for children.<\/div>\n

At this National Consultation on Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation including Online Safety (CSAE and OS) Experiences and Aspirations of Children and Young People For A Safer Online World held in 2021, Young Change Makers and Civil Society Organizations handed over the memorandum on Online Protection of Children to Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizen and Pokhara Metropolitan.<\/div>\n

16-Day Campaign on Promoting Children and Adolescent Mental Health in the Context of the COVID-19<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On December 9, 2021, a children and youth network in Cambodia, called the Child Advocate Nework or CAN, conducted a panel discussion on the theme: 16-Day Campaign on Promoting Children and Adolescent Mental Health in the Context of the COVID-19.<\/div>\n

\n
Representative of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs of Cambodia, Representative of Transcultural Psychosocial Organization (TPO) Cambodia and Representative of UNICEF attended the panel discussion.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The purpose of panel discussion were to:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
– Raise awareness and find solutions to mental health root course of problem children and adolescents during the spread out of COVID-19.<\/div>\n
– Discuss and find the root causes of mental health problems and the negative effects on children and adolescents.<\/div>\n
– Find solutions, responses, and recommendations from stakeholders such as the Ministry of Women’s Affairs of Cambodia, TPO Cambodia, and Network led by children and young people.<\/div>\n
